Honoring your transition into motherhood, postpartum series | Sierra Shawn Photography | Ithaca New York

When you think of becoming a mother what do you think of??

Do you think of the lack of showers, the soft belly, the leaky boobs, the tired eyes, maybe you think of the love that you feel for your baby.. When I think of becoming a mother, and I will tell this from both perspectives as becoming a new mom, and then becoming a mom of two…When I was pregnant with Maggie, I was…lets say blissfully unaware what both birth and postpartum entailed from just a hormonal approach. See you go from literally growing a human being, producing extra of everything to… for me it was depletion. The docs said I lost a lot of blood… I don’t remember that part. I remember the tired.. the unsure of what I was doing and if I was doing it right. I thought that if I pleased everyone that would make me happy… I am going to say something people will not agree with but your family wants to see you and that baby, but they want to hold that baby they want to kiss that baby… they want the endorphins you worked your ass of to produce for your breast milk production (yes kissing and smelling the top of your babies head released endorphins) they want to feel that oxytocin…if we can accept that we can understand it from a hormonal level… I love some great oxytocin. It feels amazing. Anyway, I didn’t realize that about by day 5 all my hormones would be trying to level, but personally I struggled. I struggled every single day with motherhood (not going to lie.. I still do)… I did not know to ask for help, or how to tell someone how to help me. With Mason it was different, I knew what I wanted, and I was not afraid to express it. Its important to me that people respect my boundaries as a mother, and really human being. We all have our flaws and even those flaws are fun to capture. I sure am loving photographing my kids meltdowns these days… Its going to remind me when they are going off to college of all the growth that we went through together. Motherhood is about growing with your child, and honoring that love between you.

I want to show you it all, I want you to love the your soft belly a day after giving birth, I want you to feel the love pour out of every single image. I want you to see the love in your tired eyes. The smile you have as you glance upon your perfect finally asleep new baby. I want to show you the fun moments you have as mother, because life is about connection no matter what. Its our connection to our children, our family, for some their connection with god.

This beautiful series was born from my love of motherhood, and being able to honor all the parts of it. This is a place that I noticed needed a little more love, so I want to share this with you! There are 10 sessions in the first 10 months - to honor how long baby “typically” is in your womb. Each session will be with babe, so we can capture that part, you are welcome to have this at home especially if you have older kids. The best part of this is that I want you to feel pampered, so you have the option to have hair and make up at every time if you would like at no additional cost! You get to look and feel like your most authentic self while getting to love on your babie(s). There is a local studio space that I adore and love to rent out, so if your not feeling like an in home session is for you, then we can shoot there. This series hopes to show you who you truly are because sometimes as mothers, wives, partners, friends, daughters, sisters, we forget who we are. This will hopefully remind you of that.
